Critical Race Theory (CRT) Reading List

Posted 09/28/21 by Teresa A

There are currently many headlines about Critical Race Theory (CRT), but the headlines don't provide an accurate definition and the debate has endured with little acknowledgment of what CRT is. Critical Race Theory is an academic concept that originated in legal studies in the 1970s and has extended to other fields of study. The theory serves as a lens through which to evaluate institutions, policies, laws, etc. through the lens of the social construct of race. The theory is not a specific training nor is it a curriculum.

When there is a problem, you need to identify it and then take necessary actions to fix it. Such a statement is hardly controversial. Yet, when applied to the issue of identifying racism within institutions, policies, and laws, controversy ensues. Racism must be acknowledged and named in order for there to be change and growth, both in ourselves and in the institutions that enable racism and allow it to thrive. Listed below are books to assist individuals interested in learning more about CRT and institutionalized racism.
